Playing catchup… Yesterday (04222018), being a Sunday, was supposedly a day of rest so I did… Sort of. I rested from the “necessary” hard work and focused on “fun” hard work. After church I spent a few hours walking the property…

Property Trail

After checking the trail cameras I focused on making my “archery ground blind” into a usable location. It meant a lot of cutting and trimming and clearing but in the end, I have an excellent “hideout” that sits along two significant game trails. I have great hopes of filling the freezer this fall!

Between Bears, Wolves & Cougars it always pays to be prepared when in the great north woods.

I did find a few “Natural Occurrences” on today’s walk…

Here is a “Rub”, both an old one (right) and a new one. This is caused when a buck is working to remove the velvet from his antlers and is a very good sign that mature bucks are on the property. At least during the mid to late summer…

Here is a small body of water that had frog eggs though they are hard to see. This likely won’t last that long but it is fun to see…

I came across this odd looking pile of stick and branches and branchs and decided for a closer look…

As I got closer I realized that things were moving! What the Heck???

Now I know why it looked like it was moving, it was! Carpenter Ants; millions of them! WOW, what a thing to see…

Once again today was all about wood; seems like there is a theme here… I had numerous logs and even a few trees that were down that needed to be cut to length and then the real work, stacked to dry. WOW, then I realized that some older downed logs needed to be split. Nothing like working a splitting maul to let you know how out of shape you are…

It was Dump Run Day, no curbside pickup of trash in the Panhandle…

While on the way to the PO, after the dump stop, I made a sidetrip to see if I could spot some Elk I had been told about. Yea; I found them! Small herd but Elk none the less!

Yesterday was a day of cutting and clearing; lots of downed trees from the winter of 2017/2018. Today was the next step of cleaning up all those branches and tree parts that are aren’t even worth cutting for the wood stove…

And So It Begins

The first thing I neded was to get water to the burn spot. I hadn’t even tried to get water from these faucets but it was needed so…

Untried No Freeze Water Faucets

Down the hole I go! This is the pump house and where the pressure tank is located. I also found that there is a valve that supplies the water to the faucets in the garden area. One leaked when I opened things up, but I just hooked the hose to it and off I went…

Down The Hole I Go!

Success, Now I Have Water

And now needed I get the pile burning and keep it burning. At times this was easier said than done as the recent rains had everything rather wet AND most of this pile was green! I pinged a couple of the neighbors that had done this before for tips and wow were they spot on. It still took time and effort but I got the burn going then just had to feed the beast!

While I Was Waiting

Almost 5 hours to get this all done; and tomorrow I get to gather, cut up and burn more; MAYBE. So busy today there was no property walk or even a chance to throw a few arrows.. Such is life sometimes…
